Simple nitrogen-base complexes of "closed shell" metal ion salts

Despite the burgeoning of sophisticated synthetic and physical techniques in recent times, many novel, important, simple and elegant compounds remain to be discovered and properly characterized. One principal focus within this group has been the study of adducts of simple metal salts with simple mono- and oligodentate Group V ligands, the approach of synthesis followed by single crystal X-ray structure determination being particularly appropriate to main group metal complexes which, in many cases, are spectroscopically 'silent'. Examples of this approach derivative of recent PhD programs may be seen in the extensive study of nitrogen base complexes of coinage metal and Group 2 salts; parallel work carried out on (main) Group 1 systems (e.g. J. C. S. Dalton, 1988, 987, 991) suggests a less-well-defined area to offer similar potential. In particular, the area of nitrogen-base complexes of Group I metal salts hither to very poorly studied, has been greatly extended recently with Honours and Ph.D programs; similar systematic studies are in progress with rare earth and transition metal adducts.
