Research Interests & Areas of Expertise

Research interest is in the area of organic synthesis associated with the preparation of cavitands bowl shaped molecules and their derivatives, which are key tectons in supramolecular chemistry and material sciences. These macrocylces can function as models for mimicking biological systems, catalysing organic reactions and molecular sensing. Cavitands are macrocyclic system bearing a cavity disposed for inclusion with a suitable guest molecule. The host-guest chemistry or molecular recognition is governed by a wide range of weak forces (eg. H-bonding, p interactions) and gaining control over these forces is of great challenge and of importance in materials and separation science. Other major research interests are in the fields of organic synthesis, nano/bio-materials, crystal engineering, phase transfer catalysis and green chemistry.

Current research activities includes:

  • Sulfonated calixarenes as an inverse phase transfer catalysts.
  • Antibacterial activity, remediation and environmental care using natural polymers
  • Green approach in organic synthesis and nano-fabrication
  • Antiviral and antibacterial screening of polyanionic cavitands
  • High performance detergents
  • Engineered materials: Molecular sieves and filters based on self assembly
  • Nano-materials for Agriculture
  • Manipulation and diagnosis of plant cells
  • Nanotoxicology
  • Cancer research

Current Students:

  • Thomas Clark
  • Ali Dadgarmehr
  • Faramarz Rostami Charati
